Self-directed learning (SDL) is increasingly recognized as a vital approach in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) education, promoting learner autonomy, motivation, and academic achievement. This article explores the role of SDL in enhancing motivation and achievement among EFL learners. It reviews theoretical foundations, examines practical applications, and discusses challenges and strategies for effective implementation. Findings indicate that SDL fosters intrinsic motivation, encourages active engagement, and improves language proficiency by empowering learners to take control of their learning processes. The study concludes that integrating SDL into EFL classrooms can significantly enhance learner outcomes and suggests ways to support its effective adoption.
