Abstract

The English language has undergone significant lexical expansion over the centuries, largely due to borrowing from various languages. This paper explores how English vocabulary has evolved by adopting words from Latin, French, German, Arabic, and other languages. It examines the historical contexts in which these borrowings occurred and analyzes their impact on the development of modern English. The study also discusses the types of borrowed wordssuch as loanwords, loan translations, and calquesand how they have enriched English linguistically and culturally. Understanding the process of lexical borrowing sheds light on the dynamic and adaptive nature of English as a global language.
