Abstract

This article compares two main methods used in English as a second language (ESL) classes – the communicative approach and the grammar-translation method. The article discusses in detail the main features, advantages, and disadvantages of these methods. According to the research results, the communicative approach has more advantages in modern language teaching, as it focuses on the practical application of language, but the grammar-translation method can also be useful in certain contexts, for example, in the in-depth study of grammatical rules. The article provides recommendations to ESL teachers on how to combine these methods and organize effective lessons.
